True Peace__Rev. Stephen Dickinson.

Peace only comes through our Lord___not a purple ribbon.

I feel I must respond to the letter issued by six individuals who described themselves as Church leaders in connection with the recent evil events in our land.

A letter from six spiritual leaders and not one Bible verse quoted, not a call for people to repent of their sin and turn to God for salvation through The Finished Work of Christ on the cross of Calvary.
Not one mention that Ulster’s problem is basically a problem of sin and evil, which isn’t merely about flesh and blood, but “principalities , powers, rulers of the darkness of this world and the spiritual wickedness in high places” (as Paul puts it in Ephesians 6) powers that can only be defeated by The Lord Jesus Christ Himself.
These leaders call for
“special”prayers to be said___surely they ought to have been encouraging the people of Ulster to become a people of prayer, daily, continually, remembering our land before The Lord and not just in response to outbreaks of evil.
In their call for prayer and their suggested topics not a mention of praying that God would come and intervene to save souls, to deliver men and women from the grip of the devil and set them free in the wonder working power of the Blood of Christ
Purple ribbons will not make a difference. If everyone in Ulster wore purple it wouldn’t mean a thing. The underlying problem would still remain, but if everyone in Ulster turned from sin to Jesus Christ and were Saved, then Ulster would be transformed.
In this anniversary year of the 1859 revival would it not have crossed their minds that this is what Ulster needs more than purple ribbons or anything else ?
A visitation of the Holy Spirit of God to convict of sin and wonderfully transform sinners who repent and turn to God through Christ.
As Presbyterians we believe the Bible to be the only infallible rule of faith and practice__yet the church leaders failed to mention it or call people to turn from sin and build their lives on its indestructible principles.
What a wasted opportunity__but then scripture tells us_” what fellowship can light have with darkness” Paul tells us that scripture is useful for “doctrine, reproof, correction and instruction in righteousness”__that’s what Ulster needs!
The Bible says in Psalm 85 v 10 that “righteousness and peace kiss”-not murderers and peace, not compromise and peace, not terrorists in government and peace, not even wearing purple and peace. “Righteousness and peace”. What a wasted opportunity for the Church leaders to call our people to righteousness- living first and foremost in a right relationship with God through personal saving faith in Christ, discovering peace with God and then living in a right relationship with others.
Cardinal Sean Brady doesn’t represent me and I know the world likes the churches to be seen to be together, but I would have preferred our Moderator to have released his own statement because I believe it would have been a much more meaningful ,biblical and spiritual call, which would have been effective and helpful in our land at this very sad, dark, dangerous and difficult time.
The peace of God, that Ulster so desperately needs, and which passes all understanding-doesn’t start on the streets, or even in the Churches-it starts in the heart of sinners who put their trust in The Lord.
