Ian Paisley hails Catholic priest for fostering ‘spirit of unity’
Francis Elliott, Deputy Political Editor
Ian Paisley has praised a Roman Catholic priest who led prayers for the two soldiers murdered by the Real IRA, saying that a “spirit of unity” was emerging from Northern Ireland’s despair.

The former First Minister paid tribute to Father Tony Devlin, a local priest, for his condemnation of the killers during a service outside the barracks on Sunday. It was, he said, “one of the greatest speeches that I have ever heard from any man of the cloth”. He added: “There is grieving, there is despair, but beyond the despair there is being born a new spirit of unity that we have never seen before.”

He was speaking after a Commons statement by Shaun Woodward, the Northern Ireland Secretary, in which he said that the Province had endured “a very dark few days”.

  1. And this man is still allowed to remain as a minister?
When you look back over the years if a Free Presbyterian Minister had glanced at a Roman priest Paisley would have destroyed him.

We will await the Morals Committee statement on the issue, but then again they still have to speak after his offensive chuckling with the mass murderer.
