MPs defeat move to ban
embryo research

Scientists will be allowed to create hybrid human-animal embryos after MPs voted in favour of the radical stem cell research.

Last night in the Commons attempts to ban hybrids were defeated on a free vote, by 336 to 176.

Critics of the research including many Christian groups called the proposed changes in the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill immoral and dangerous.

But the majority of MPs voted in favour of the human-animal embryos.

Both Gordon Brown and David Cameron supported the controversial research, arguing that the potential for stem cell research using hybrids may transform the lives of millions and lead to cures for many diseases.

In a second win for the Government, saviour siblings research was also given the green light by MPs. That means children will now be born to find tissue matches for their ill siblings – and treatment will be possible.

MPs now must face a further debate and vote this afternoon, as they decide whether IVF clinics should consider the need for a father.

Dr. Dan Boucher from Christian campaign group CARE tells Premier that the need for a father should not be dismissed:

“Social science research shows that having a Father is very important. When the state is involved in deliberately trying to create a child they should have regard for that child’s need for a Father
